How to Add Hindi Subtitles to a Video, Free and Without an App
Last updated: October 4, 2026
Most Hindi videos are not pure Hindi. People say gym, office, video and phone in the middle of a Hindi sentence. Good Hindi subtitles should look the way people speak: Hindi in Devanagari, and those English words in English letters. Here is how to make them for free in your browser.
Free Hindi subtitle generator. Your video is not uploaded.
Add Hindi subtitles →Hindi the way people speak it
A speech model trained on Hindi writes everything in Devanagari, including English words: "वीडियो", "जिम", "ऑफिस". That is correct, but it is not how most people would type the line. The Free Subtitle Generator turns common English words back into English letters:
| Speech model output | What the subtitle shows |
|---|---|
| मैं जिम जाता हूँ | मैं gym जाता हूँ |
| ये वीडियो देखो | ये video देखो |
| आज ऑफिस नहीं जाना | आज office नहीं जाना |
It does this with a word list of about 400 English words as they are written in Devanagari. It also keeps a list of real Hindi words that look like English words (बस, पास, बार) so they are never changed. Anything the list does not cover stays in Devanagari until you edit it.
Step by step
- Open the Free Subtitle Generator in Chrome or Safari.
- Pick your video (up to 3 minutes). It is not uploaded.
- Choose Hindi. The first time, the Hindi speech engine (about 107 MB) downloads once. Wi-Fi helps.
- Check the words. Underlined words are the ones the tool is unsure about. Tap a line to fix it. Use Find and replace for a name that is wrong everywhere.
- Pick a style. Fonts that suit Devanagari include Mukta, Hind and Baloo 2. Bold pop and Karaoke fill read well on a phone.
- Save the video or download the words as an SRT file.
Tips for Hindi videos
- Speak clearly and keep music low. Background songs with Hindi lyrics confuse speech recognition the most.
- Check names, places and brand names. They are the most common mistakes in any language.
- Short lines read better. Split a long line into two on the Check words step, or pick a style that shows fewer words at a time.
- Keep words away from app buttons. On Reels, Shorts and Status, turn on "Show where apps put their buttons" on the style step.
Hindi in English letters (Roman Hindi)
Many creators write "Hinglish" captions fully in English letters: "main gym jaata hoon". The tool does not do that automatically yet. You can retype any line in English letters on the Check words step and the timing is kept.
Frequently asked questions
Does it write Hindi in Devanagari or English letters?
Devanagari, with common English words in English letters, for example “मैं gym जाता हूँ”. It cannot yet write the whole line in English letters (Roman Hindi); you can retype any line yourself.
Why are some words underlined?
The tool underlines words it is not sure about: an English word it matched loosely, or a word whose timing looks wrong. Check those first.
Is the Hindi download bigger?
Yes. The Hindi speech engine is about 107 MB, downloaded once and kept in your browser. The other five languages share one engine of about 80 MB.
Can it translate Hindi to English subtitles?
No. It writes down the language that is spoken.
Is there a watermark?
Every video carries a small moving id8 mark. The SRT, VTT and text files have none.
