How-To
How to Make an Instagram Reel from Photos with Music, Free and Without a Watermark
Last updated: October 2, 2026
A Reel does not have to be filmed. A handful of good photos, a track and one line of text make a Reel that people watch to the end. This guide covers the steps, the right size, and the mistakes that make photo Reels look cropped or blurry.

Make a Reel from photos →Two ways to make a photo Reel
Inside Instagram. Tap +, choose Reel, select several photos and add audio from Instagram's library. This is the easiest route to a trending song, because the licence is handled by Instagram.
Before Instagram. Build the video first and upload the finished file. This gives you control over how long each photo shows, how photos are framed, what the text looks like, and it gives you one file you can also post as a YouTube Short and a WhatsApp Status.
This guide covers the second way, using the Free Short Video Maker.
Step by step
- Add photos. Open the maker and add up to ten photos. Short video clips can be mixed in.
- Order them. Put the strongest photo first. People decide in the first second whether to keep watching.
- Set the pace. Each photo can show for 2 to 5 seconds. Two seconds feels energetic and suits travel and events; three or four suits portraits and products.
- Fix the framing. For each photo choose Fill (the photo covers the frame, edges cropped) or Fit (the whole photo is shown). Portrait photos: Fill. Landscape and group photos: Fit.
- Add music. Search the free library by mood. The tracks are Creative Commons, from Jamendo. You can choose which part of the track plays, so start at the chorus, not the intro.
- Add text. One short line. Choose a colour that contrasts with your photos and an animation.
- Make the video and save it to your phone.
- Upload. In Instagram tap +, choose Reel, pick the video, write the caption and share.
Getting the size right
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Shape | 9:16 vertical |
| Recommended by Instagram | 1080×1920 |
| Exported by this maker | 720×1280 |
| Format | MP4, H.264 video, AAC audio |
The maker exports 720p because the video is built on your phone, and 720p keeps that fast. Instagram accepts it. If you need full 1080p for a brand account, use a desktop editor for that export.
Keep text out of the edges
Instagram puts the caption, the audio name and the buttons over the bottom and right of every Reel, and the top is covered on some screens. Text in the middle of the frame is never hidden. If your line sits low, shorten it or move the message so it does not collide with the caption.
Photo choices that work
- One subject per photo. Busy photos are hard to read in two seconds.
- Similar light. A set shot at the same time of day looks like one story.
- Portrait orientation where you can. It fills the screen.
- A clear last photo. End on the image you want remembered.
Ideas for photo Reels
- A trip in eight photos.
- Before and after: a room, a recipe, a drawing.
- A product from four angles and one in use.
- A year in photos, one per month.
- An event recap the same evening.
Music and copyright, briefly
Music you add before uploading is checked by Instagram. A Creative Commons track or your own recording is not a problem. A film song can lead to muted audio or limited reach. If the song matters more than control over the edit, add it inside Instagram instead and upload your video without music.
Reuse the same file
The file you made is a standard vertical MP4. Upload the same file as a YouTube Short and as a WhatsApp Status and you have three posts from one two-minute job.
Frequently asked questions
What size should an Instagram Reel be?
A Reel is a vertical 9:16 video. Instagram recommends 1080×1920 pixels and accepts smaller 9:16 sizes such as 720×1280.
Can I make a Reel from photos only?
Yes. Photos shown one after another with music are a normal Reel. You can also mix in short video clips.
Will Instagram mute my music?
It can, if the track is copyrighted and you are not using it through Instagram's own music library. Tracks from a Creative Commons library, or music you made, are the safe choice for music added before upload.
How many photos should a Reel have?
Five to ten. At two to three seconds each this gives a 10 to 30 second Reel, which suits most photo sets.
Is there a watermark?
No. The Free Short Video Maker does not add a watermark.
